Book Review: Crash

Title: Crash
Author: Nicole Williams
Genre: YA Romance
Published: 2010

Rating:

Brief Overview: Good girl Lucy falls for Jude, a football playing, high school-criminal bad ass, but the things Lucy doesn't know about Jude's past could keep them from being together.

Impressions: My early impressions of this book were not good. Author Nicole Williams has no concept of how to write believable dialogue between teenagers. Nearly every time a character speaks it is either cringe-worthy or chock full of expressions that no one would ever use conversationally.

The story itself was a cliche: boy from the wrong side of the tracks and so on. Pretty typical. Since Lucy is a dancer in the book, it initially reminded me a little of the movie Step Up.

The early chapters of this book were so cheesy I could hardly stand it. But then something happened - many chapters in, I realized I had gotten quite invested in Lucy and Jude and I wanted to keep reading. I also noticed that nearer to the end of the book, the dialogue started to seem less corny and forced (or perhaps I just stopped noticing.) It took some pretty big twists and turns at the end, but it was a bit of a wait to get there. The later chapters were interesting enough that I opted to rate it a 3 rather than the 2 I had intended to give it.
Crash is your run of the mill, garden variety, young adult romance, but it was also a better story than I initially gave it credit for.

What to read next: Crush by Nicole Williams or Find You in the Dark by A. Meredith Walters

  2. I had the same thoughts - I thought it was going to be fairly run of the mill, but it ended up having more depth to it than I imagined.
