Brief Overview: Cassia Reyes lives in a dystopian society based on probability and predictions. In The Society everything is monitored - even food is distributed based on individual nutritional needs. Everyone in The Society is healthy and their lives are scheduled for them. At 80 years old, everyone, including Cassia's grandfather, have their final banquets and then die. At age 17, members of Society are matched with a partner with whom they will eventually enter into a marriage contract. In Matched, Cassia begins to suspect that there has been a mistake with her match and finds herself falling for someone else. Meanwhile, there are changes going on in The Society and it seems like there may be trouble ahead.
Impressions: If you like reading about dystopian societies this is a good book, though not too different from other books in the genre. Since Matched is the first book in the trilogy, a lot of the story line was an explanation of how The Society works. We learn about Cassia's Match Banquet, her grandfather's Final Banquet, and the work, school and leisure activities they participate in. Much of this book seems to be a set up for what is going to happen next. Matched was okay, but it really made me want to read Crossed. There isn't much action in the book until near the end. Warning: There is a bit of a love triangle but it's not too cheesy, so don't let that stop you from reading the book. I liked Matched and am anxious to find out what happens next.
